What is Victorian Caroling?
Victorian Caroling is usually a group of singers (4 or more) who dress in period costume and serenade listeners. Victorian Carolers can be found at holiday functions, parties, store openings, city events, church events, and even singing from door to door during the holiday season.
While much of the music sung by Victorian Carolers is usually traditional Christmas carols, many troupes often sing older music or even modern favorites!
The History of Victorian Caroling
Victorian Caroling developed during the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era mirrored the rein of Queen Victoria in Britain (and over the British Empire) from June 20th, 1837 to January 22nd, 1901. The Victorian Era is characterized by an enlightening of sorts, a time in which much thought and support was given to using the arts and sciences to advance, and improve, society.
Many of the Christmas carols we know today can be traced to the Victorian Era. Although caroling is an ancient practice, it became a popular pastime for mid- and upper-class families to go from house to house singing cheerful carols during Christmas.
